We have just celebrated the 240th anniversary of the “Declaration of Independence.” This document not only declared our independence from England, but it also stated rights given to us by the Lord. We are so fortunate to live in a country where we can have freedom to exercise these rights.

The Message (John 8:31-36). Jesus talks about the ultimate freedom—freedom from the slavery of sin (v. 34). Every person who has ever inhabited planet earth was born a “slave of sin.” Unbelievers are totally controlled by their sin nature. They do not have the ability to overcome the desires of the flesh (Romans 8:7-8).

There is only one message and one person who can set man free from the slavery of sin (John 8:32). It is only by responding to the truth of the Gospel that you can be set free from sin. There is one true message of salvation. No self-help course will help you. No other philosophy or religious teaching will help you. Only the truth about Christ and what He accomplished on the cross will set you free from the power of sin.

The Person (John 8:36). The Lord Jesus Christ is the only Saviour who can set you free (John 14:6; Acts 4:12). No other religious leader can help you. There is only one way and one Saviour.

As Americans, we should cherish the freedoms we enjoy. But, as Christians, we should thank God every day for the ultimate freedom—freedom from the power of sin.
