Today Wednesday morning (February 20, 2013) we lost one of the great saints, Dr. Howard Hendricks, who faithfully taught at Dallas Theological Seminary for 60 years and was used of God around the world.

The last message Dr. Hendricks preached in chapel at DTS was “The Ultimate Test” 2 Timothy 2:15.  He points out that when we stand before the Lord Jesus to give account for our lives and ministries, we will have to answer three questions.

  1. Was He, the Lord, well pleased?  We want to be “approved” by Him and  not “ashamed.”
  2. Was the work well done?  We are to “make every effort” to do the work of the Lord with excellence in the power of the Spirit.
  3. Was the Word well used?  We must know God’s Word and present it accurately and clearly to God’s people.

Notice the Lord is not concerned about how large our churches are, or how famous we are, or how much influence we have.  He is concerned about the things that bring glory to His name.

What a fitting last word to all of us who sat under the teaching of “Prof” Hendricks.  May we, as he did on Wednesday morning, hear the words of our great savior, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
